Choosing the right hydraulic oil matters more than most operators expect. The wrong viscosity grade costs you pump efficiency, raises operating temperature and shortens seal life. Running a monograde where a high-viscosity-index oil is specified costs you cold-start protection every winter morning.

Which Hydraulic Oil Grade Do You Need?
ISO VG 32 — lighter mobile hydraulics, high-speed pumps, and systems running in cooler ambient conditions.
ISO VG 46 — the workhorse grade. Most industrial hydraulic systems, excavators, TLBs and injection moulding machines in South African ambient temperatures.
ISO VG 68 — high-ambient or heavy-load systems, and older pumps where clearances have opened up.
ISO VG 100 — heavy industrial applications running low speed under high load.
High viscosity index grades (Shell Tellus S2 V, Fuchs Renolin B HGI) — outdoor mobile equipment that has to work across a wide temperature swing, from a cold Highveld morning to a hot afternoon.
TO-4 fluids (Shell Spirax S4 CX 10W, Caltex Delo TorqForce 10W, Engen Transfluid TO-4, Fuchs Titan UTTO TO-4) — earthmoving and mining equipment where the OEM specifies a TO-4 powertrain fluid rather than a straight hydraulic oil. Do not substitute a standard hydraulic oil here; the friction requirements for wet brakes and powershift transmissions are different.
